Natural & Bioactive Vivarium Supplies
Bioactive and naturalistic vivariums are becoming increasingly popular among reptile keepers, as they help create environments that more closely resemble an animal’s natural habitat. By using natural materials such as bark, moss, wood, and specialised substrates, keepers can build a more realistic and enriching enclosure for reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.
A bioactive vivarium is designed to function as a small ecosystem. The substrate contains living organisms such as springtails and isopods, often referred to as a “clean-up crew”, which help break down waste material, uneaten food, shed skin, and organic matter within the enclosure. This natural process helps keep the vivarium healthier and can reduce the amount of routine cleaning required once the system is properly established.
Bioactive setups are often combined with live plants and layered substrates to create a stable and natural environment. Materials such as moss, bark, soil-based substrates, and natural wood can be used to provide hiding places, climbing structures, and areas for natural behaviours such as burrowing and exploration.
It is important to note that many clean-up crew species require moderate to high humidity to thrive. Because of this, fully bioactive setups are not suitable for every reptile species or enclosure type. Snakes in particular are generally very clean animals that defecate infrequently, meaning bioactive custodians may sometimes require additional food sources to maintain a healthy population.
For many keepers, a naturalistic vivarium setup provides an excellent alternative. Naturalistic enclosures use many of the same materials such as natural substrates, bark, moss, and wood décor, but without the addition of invertebrate custodians. This approach still provides environmental enrichment and a more natural-looking enclosure while being suitable for a wider range of species.
When building planted or frequently misted enclosures, adding a drainage layer is strongly recommended. Clay drainage balls can be used at the base of the vivarium to create a water reservoir that prevents the substrate from becoming oversaturated. A separating layer such as fleece or mesh helps keep the drainage layer and substrate from mixing.
At Living Art Ball Pythons, we stock a range of natural vivarium materials and bioactive supplies, including cork décor, natural woods, sphagnum moss, bark substrates, and drainage materials to help you build naturalistic or bioactive reptile enclosures.
Whether you are creating a fully bioactive vivarium or simply adding natural elements to your reptile’s habitat, our range of natural and bioactive products will help you build a healthier, more natural environment for your animals.
