Creating the correct substrate is essential for maintaining the health and wellbeing of tortoises. This carefully balanced mix of soils, sand and rock closely replicates the natural environments of species such as Hermann’s Tortoises and Greek Spur-Thighed Tortoises.

The structure of the substrate allows for digging and burrowing, encouraging natural behaviours, while also retaining moisture to help maintain essential microclimates within the enclosure.

The addition of limestone provides a natural source of calcium, which can be beneficial if small amounts are ingested during normal activity.

This substrate is also suitable for certain arid and temperate lizard species, particularly those that enjoy burrowing, such as Mediterranean Lacertids.

Directions for Use:
Spread evenly across the enclosure base to a depth of 2–3 inches (5–7.5cm) for small tortoises, or 3–6 inches (7.5–15cm) for larger individuals. Lightly spray at intervals to maintain appropriate humidity levels. Do not overfill if using underfloor heating. Spot clean regularly and replace as required.
